There was a general sense of grumbling, blinking, and rubbing of eyes when Keith and the group of over fifty people arrived back in the Fourliance. He’d made sure to warn them about the time disparity but going from total darkness to late afternoon in the span of three seconds had to be disorienting.

“Keith? What’s going on out here?” Alicia asked, emerging from inside, followed by Fall.

Keith had warned them that he’d be arranging things but hadn’t exactly been able to explain how he was going to do it all. Having a large group of strangers and a ton of building materials suddenly appear on your property had to be disconcerting.

“This,” he said, gesturing to everything, “is your new business. Or at least, it will be. Jaques?”

A vampire in his early fifties and dressed in fine clothes approached, adjusting his glasses and hiding a yawn.

“This is Jaques,” Keith said, introducing the vampire to the elves. “He’ll be overseeing all business operations, pay, construction, plans, and the like for the next six months. He’s already been briefed on the job, and you can rest assured that his services are well worth what we’ll be paying him.”

“Uh, okay,” Alicia said, still adjusting to the fact that there were people everywhere.

“He didn’t tell you we’d be coming, did he?” Jaques said, giving Keith a sidelong glare.

“No, he did not,” Alicia replied, though she seemed more confused than upset.

“I apologize for our rude intrusion then,” he said, extending his hand. Alicia and Fall shook it as the man stifled another yawn. “You must excuse me. The time difference between here and Humania is quite extreme. I’ll have my men remain awake until nightfall, but we won’t begin any of our planning until tomorrow, if that’s alright with you.”

Fall blinked as the man addressed him. He looked to Keith and his sister, expecting either of them to step in, but when neither did, he nodded reluctantly.

“Very good. Would it be okay for us to make our lodging on your property madam? If not, we can take our tents to-”

“Go ahead and make yourselves at home,” Alicia said quickly.

Jaques gave her a tired smile, bowed, and turned to address those who’d come with him. A few moments later, three burly men detached themselves from the group and came over to introduce themselves. Unlike the others, they seemed alert and ready for anything. These would be some of the guards.

“I’m Grax, head guard for this shift. Would you be so kind as to walk us along the perimeter and let me know of any ongoing issues?”

Fall blinked once again but nodded faster this time and went off to escort the guards along the fence.

“This is a lot,” Alicia said, watching as the people began to unpack tents and pitch them in a clear area. “I won’t even ask how you got them all here so quickly, but I can see you really do mean business.”

“I needed someone I could trust to get the job done,” he replied. “Most of my reliable contacts are back in Humania.
